This ministry of prayer, now known as the Greater Dallas Prayer Ministry, began in 1972 after EXPO '72 with its mission to foster an increase in prayer for the needs of our nation. We also endeavored to be a witness to our city in response to the hope promised in 2 Chronicles 7:14, Jeremiah 29:7, 1 Timothy 2:1-2. It has offered prayer training through workshops and at least one annual prayer seminar featuring a nationally known speaker at a variety of churches in the area. Many Godly voices have been catalysts for church prayer ministries now operating around the city. There have been over 350 church contacts.
The North Texas National Day of Prayer Celebration grew out of the GDPM in the early 1990s. Previously, it had simply urged the churches of Dallas to recognize that a NDP had been established in 1952 by an act of Congress. After 1988, when the 100th Congress passed a bill, signed by President Ronald Reagan, to "provide for setting aside the first Thursday in May as the annual National Day of Prayer", the GDPM began coordinating local events for Dallas and the Metroplex.
For the last three years, the GDPM has sponsored events focusing on Isaiah 58:12, "thou shall be called to raise up the foundations of many generations, and thou shall be called repairers of the breach, the restorer of paths to dwell in." Dr. John Perkins, honorary co-chair of Mission America with Dr. Billy Graham and Dr. Bill Bright delivered the original message in 1999.
September 11, 2001, (911) has exposed to our nation the need for many to be praying for our nation. However, it only confirms that although there are now many groups "standing in the gap on behalf of this land that it should not be destroyed," no one group has the whole picture of the puzzle. If we are to see our city, nation and world brought to revival, the "whole church" must be in unity.
Please join us in our monthly fellowship for a Concert of Prayer. Come, bring your piece of the puzzle, and let us join together to pray for God's purpose.
A one hour Concert of Prayer is held on the fourth Monday of each month at 12 Noon.
